Is there a regulatory authority for this type of product?
NO
Repellents are not considered to be medicines, or even cosmetics; they are classified in the biocides category, and their manufacturers must follow European Directive 98/8/EC*.
In addition, repellents will not require a Marketing Authorisation (MA) until the end of 2008. Nonetheless, faced with the Chikungunya crisis in Reunion and Mayotte in early 2006, the AFSSAPS set up a monitoring system to study any potential undesirable effects due to the use of repellents for the body.
* European Directive 98/8/EC of the Parliament and the European Council of 16 February 1998, regarding the marketing of biocide products.
